Working to End Homelessness in Orange County

Over the last few years, the County has made considerable progress in creating the system of care for the homeless. However, homelessness continues to be a communitywide issue, and we are committed to working collaboratively with our cities to find a solution to this problem.

Since the County became involved in the federal court case pertaining to homelessness, we have made progress in enhancing the system of care. In recent weeks, the County has made significant strides including:

  • A pilot program with Illumination Foundation to serve the 60 most severe medical cases among the homeless.
  • Enhanced mental health treatment beds
  • Enhanced recuperative care services
  • Additional Health Care Agency Outreach and Engagement staff and police resources stationed in South County cities

The County continues to work with cities to address the immediate need to enhance shelter capacity and the County will reach a milestone with the completion of the first year round emergency shelter, Bridges at Kramer.

As the County continues to address the immediate need for additional bed capacity, we are focused on the long term goal of creating 2,700 permanent supportive housing (PSH) units. The County is moving forward with nearly 500 PSH units in the pipeline, and we will continue to work with our cities toward the 2,700 unit goal.

DUI Checkpoint in San Clemente this Weekend

Members of the Orange County Sheriff's DUI Enforcement Team will hold a DUI and Driver's License Checkpoint this weekend to stop and arrest alcohol and drug-impaired drivers as part of the department's ongoing traffic safety campaign.

The checkpoint will be held from 7 PM on Friday, June 1, to 3 AM Saturday, June 2.

High Visibility Enforcement using both DUI checkpoints and DUI Saturation Patrols have proven to lower the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol and drug impaired crashes.

The OCSD also supports the new effort from the Office of Traffic Safety that aims to educate all drivers the "DUI Doesn't Just Mean Booze". If you take prescription drugs, particularly those with a driving or operating machinery warning on the label, you might be impaired enough to get a DUI.

Drivers are encouraged to download the Designated Driver VIP, or "DDVIP", a free mobile app for Andrios and iPhone. The DDVIP app helps find nearby bars and resturants that feature free incentives for the designated sober driver, from free non-alcoholic drinks to free appetizers and more. The feature-packed app even has social media tie-ins and even a tab for the non-DD to call Uber, Lyft or Curb.

Funding for this DUI operation is provided to the Orange County Sheriff's Department by a grant from the CA Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reminding everyone to "Report Drunk Driver -- Call 9-1-1.
