Orange County Approves Landmark Settlement Agreement in Homeless Litigation

The Orange County Board of Supervisors approved a landmark homeless litigation settlement. This settlement is an important step forward in Orange County’s efforts to build our System of Care and broader homeless response plan.

We’re showing the way forward with this settlement through shelter and wrap around services. The county is also implementing innovative solutions to further address homelessness such a public private partnerships to develop a mental health system, establishment of the inaugural Orange County Housing Finance Trust, and breaking down silos to deliver integrated correctional services.

For three years, I have championed this effort as the First District Supervisor, following my proposal to create the Director of Care Coordination position.

Orange County will continue to do everything we can to provide help to those in need who are willing to embrace a constructive life path, and we won’t tolerate dangerous elements intent on harassing our neighborhoods.

I want to thank the Judge Carter for his leadership, this landmark settlement will allow the county and cities in the North and Central Service Planning Areas to enforce local anti-camping ordinances and protect our neighborhoods.

For more details, check out coverage of the settlement.

Board Approves $11 million in Funding for Affordable Housing in Santa Ana

This Tuesday, I was proud to lead the Board of Supervisors in approving the selection of Related California (Related) to develop an 86-unit affordable and permanent supportive housing project located on vacant land just off the Interstate 5 and steps away from the Santa Ana Regional Transportation Station. The County will fund more than $11 million toward this project. This development is unique because the City of Santa Ana and the County are partnering to turn two vacant adjacent lots into much-needed housing.

At the County’s request, Related added additional units to the project and dramatically increased the proposed number of Permanent Supportive Housing from 16 to 43 of the units. This development will also be 100% ADA-accessible. The surrounding neighborhood will benefit, as the developer has committed to contribute toward improvements at the nearby Logan Park. The Board’s action in support of this project is yet one more example of Orange County’s commitment to address the high cost of housing and prevent homelessness.
