OC Helps Small Business do Business with the County

For over a year, I have worked with Chairwoman Lisa Bartlett, Supervisor of the Fifth District, to deliver an innovative program that will boost our local economy and create jobs without raising the cost of government.

During last Tuesday’s board meeting, the Board of Supervisors approved the Local Small Business Preference Policy, which will engage local small businesses and expand opportunities for minority and women-owned businesses.

Starting September 1, 2019, Orange County-based small businesses will be first in line as they compete for hundreds of millions of dollars in contracts issued by the county government.

Orange County spends over 1/4 of its $7 billion budget on contracts every year. By working with small businesses in the county, we are reinvesting our tax dollars back into our community, creating more job opportunities and continued economic prosperity for Orange County.

Orange County joins numerous other governments in adopting a preference policy for procurements – Los Angeles, San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino, Sacramento, and Imperial Counties.

Mayor of Sacramento Visits First District Office to Discuss Efforts in Mental Health Services and Battling Homelessness

Last week the Mayor of Sacramento, Darrell Steinberg, stopped by my office to discuss Orange County’s effort to build a comprehensive System of Care and the recently approved settlement on the homeless litigation which will allows local jurisdiction to enforce anti-camping ordinances. Mayor Steinberg is the author of Proposition 63, the Mental Health Services Act, and a leader in mental health policymaking.

During his visit, I updated him on Senate Bill 665, authored by Senator Tom Umberg and sponsored by County of Orange, which would allow the use of Mental Health Service Act funds to be used for those who qualify for service in our county jails. I look forward to visiting Mayor Steinberg up in Sacramento to learn more about their efforts to address homelessness.

Recap for Goldenwest Estates Neighborhood Coffee and Westminster West Ice Pop Social

Last week, I visited the Goldenwest Estates and Westminster West neighborhoods. We talked about a number of issues like public safety challenges that early release from prison programs have created. Orange County is working hard to address these challenges and keep our communities safe. If you couldn’t join me last week, I hope you can make it to one of my future events!
